notes on the possibilities of object-based learning in pedagogy for art and design.

a reflection on ” HOW INCLUSIVE IS OBJECT-BASED LEARNING? BY JENNY LELKES, ASSISTANT ACADEMIC SUPPORT LIBRARIAN

  1. RELATION

OBL encourages students to attach and construct their own meaning.

We do not impose knowledge or teach in an authoritative manner, but rather guide and probe students’ reflections.

2. CO-PRODUCERS, EXISTING OTHERWISE

Community- there is a democratic process of knowledge creation.

Every participant is a co-producer of knowledge.

Objects introduced into the space can be performative objects that require participation.

3. SIGNIFIERS, CRITICAL THINKING

OBL encourages students to think critically by posing questions of labour, means of production, agency, access, power, etc.

4. TRANSFORMS THE SPACE OF ART.

OBL encourages students to bring into the space of art, complex objects of their every day, and those that don’t exist within the traditional canons or vocabulary of art, thereby silently transforming and diversifying the curriculum and thus the space of art.
